Program Description

Pre-Kindergarten builds children's strengths and skills in a playful, language-rich environment. To attend Pre-Kindergarten, children need to meet criteria to be eligible. Learn more about placement in the Pre-Kindergarten Program for 2019-20.

  • Develop speech, language and motor skills through exploration and guided activities
  • Learn to share, problem solve and express themselves
  • Discover new experiences, friends and a love of learning

PROGRAM DELIVERY

  • Half-day classes, four days per week
  • 8 to 16 children per class
  • Playful and engaging learning environment
  • Flexible instruction based on children’s needs and interests
  • Families and children have direct access to multidisciplinary support, such as speech and language, physical therapy, occupational therapy and school family liaison services

ELIGIBILITY  

Pre-Kindergarten is for children aged three and four. To be eligible, children need to meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • English Language Learners (must be 4 years old by December 31 of the year they are attending)
  • First Nations, Metis, Inuit (must be 4 years old by December 31 of the year they are attending)
  • Mild/Moderate developmental delays (must be 4 years old by December 31 of the year they are attending)
  • Severe developmental delays (must be 3 years old by December 31 of the year they are attending)

Pre-Kindergarten may be available to children for one, two or three years of programming, depending on children’s needs.

ELIGIBILITY FOR PRE-KINDERGARTEN

Interested in Pre-Kindergarten for the 2019-20 school year? You will need to attend a screening session with your child unless they have or are scheduled for an assessment from a healthcare provider.

For children with assessments or reports

If your child has a report (dated after March 1, 2019) from Alberta Health Services or another healthcare provider, or is scheduled to receive an assessment after March 1:

You do not need to attend a screening session if your child has or will have an assessment report.

Screening Sessions

To find out if your child is eligible for Pre-Kindergarten in the upcoming school year, families are invited to sign up for a screening session. Parents only need to sign up for one session.

*The Tevie Miller Heritage School Program is for children with a primary diagnosis of severe language and/or speech delays. The screening and placement process for this school is different from others that offer Pre-Kindergarten. Contact the school directly for more information.

During screening sessions, a Speech Language Pathologist and Occupational Therapist will use toys, books and fun activities to evaluate your child to help us figure out if your child is eligible for Pre-Kindergarten.

ALBERTA CURRICULUM

All Edmonton Public Schools programming is based on curriculum determined by Alberta Education. Children enrolled in Pre-Kindergarten will receive the same high-quality education offered in all of our programs.
